Intense Light-Mediated Circadian Cardioprotection via Transcriptional Reprogramming of the Endothelium

Applying light therapy before high-risk non-cardiac or cardiac surgery to enhance the circadian amplitude might be able to provide robust cardioprotection. Light-elicited circadian amplitude enhancement suggests an overall increase in PER2 levels and concomitant cardioprotection even at the trough of the amplitude, indicating that this strategy could promote general cardioprotection and potentially decrease troponin levels in both morning and evening times. However, future studies of humans will be necessary to understand the impact of intense light therapy and its potential role in cardioprotection.
