Karpowership, a unit of the Turkish Karadeniz Energy Group, is on track for its longest contract to date to supply power from vessels to South Africa in a deal worth as much as R218 billion ($15 billion).

The company that advertises a “fast, flexible, reliable” solution of floating electricity generation was named last week as a preferred bidder for three projects fueled by liquefied natural gas to provide 1,220 megawatts of electricity.

The program is aimed at closing a supply gap in South Africa that’s resulting in periodic blackouts.

The 20-year deal will cost as much as R10.9 billion annually, according to a presentation by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, a state institution.

The estimate is based on the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s evaluation price of the bids. It didn’t immediately reply to requests for comment.

The award adds a significant amount of generation capacity from fossil fuels for two more decades as South Africa plans a move away from coal that dominates its current power supply and has made it the world’s 12th biggest source of greenhouse gases.

Other, smaller, projects chosen use a mix of solar and wind with batteries and LNG.

“Power ships have proven effective at providing fast-response, emergency electricity — hence the maximum 10-year tenor for past contracts,” said Antoine Vagneur-Jones, an analyst at BNEF’s energy transition policy team for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

“That the South African government would procure one for 20 years speaks to the depths of the country’s power crisis, and questionable long-term planning in light of dropping renewables costs.”

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Another Pensacola resident is dealing with the frustrations of a 5G cell tower being installed right outside her home.

Channel 3 has reported on several poles going up in undesirable locations, but this one might be the most jarring.

The pole went up in September, and it’s just feet away from Phyllis Bardin’s front door.

The East Baton Rouge Metro Council approved new rules Wednesday governing the look and placement of 5G cell towers, including a unique provision its authors expect to be copied in cities across the nation. 

The ordinance is the culmination of nearly 16 months of work that kicked off last year after an outcry from homeowners, who said they were given little to no notice when AT&T began installing the cell towers in the public rights of way in front of their homes.

Touted as the next generation of wireless broadband, 5G technology promises faster, more reliable internet service. But its rollout locally drew criticism from homeowners’ associations and residents, who say the towers housing the new technology can be eyesores and diminish property values.

The 35-page ordinance requires wireless providers to send a notice via first-class postage — within two days of applying for a construction permit — to all landowners and homeowners’ associations within a 300 foot radius of the site for the proposed facility. The Metro Council member representing the area must also be notified and a blaze orange placard must be placed on-site as notice.

This is, in our opinion, a very misguided statement.

What is not mentioned is that tower workers are required to use radiation monitoring devices to ensure that they do not exceed ICNIRP’s levels (in case the towers are not switched off).

If a tower is not switched off, a worker is only allowed to spend a very short period working on the tower or adjacent to rooftop antennas. Doors leading to rooftop antennas are kept locked with “Danger – Radiation” warning sign on the doors.

A case study was published recently in a medical journal about a cell phone tower technician from Southern California. He was exposed to massive radiation amounts in 2011, when a Verizon worker switched the towers back on after they’d been shut down for maintenance. Moskowitz, Ph.D.has directed the Center for Family and Community Health in the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley since 1993. Dr. Moskowitz has published research on disease prevention programs and policies for 40 years. In 2009 he served as the senior author on a hallmark paper reviewing research on mobile phone use and tumor risk published in theJournal of Clinical Oncology  Since then he has translated and disseminated research on the biologic and health effects research of wireless radiation.

He is an advisor to the International EMF Scientist Appeal signed by over 240 scientists who have published more than 2,000 papers and letters in professional journals on electromagnetic fields and biology or health.  In 2017 he won alawsuitagainst the California Department of Public Health for suppressing its own scientists’ cell phone safety guidance for eight years. This resulted in the Department finally publishing cell phone health warnings.
