Abstract

Repeated Wi-Fi studies show that Wi-Fi causes oxidative stress, sperm/testicular damage, neuropsychiatric effects including EEG changes, apoptosis, cellular DNA damage, endocrine changes, and calcium overload. Each of these effects are also caused by exposures to other microwave frequency EMFs, with each such effect being documented in from 10 to 16 reviews. Therefore, each of these seven EMF effects are established effects of Wi-Fi and of other microwave frequency EMFs. Each of these seven is also produced by downstream effects of the main action of such EMFs, voltage-gated calcium channel (VGCC) activation. While VGCC activation via EMF interaction with the VGCC voltage sensor seems to be the predominant mechanism of action of EMFs, other mechanisms appear to have minor roles. Minor roles include activation of other voltage-gated ion channels, calcium cyclotron resonance and the geomagnetic magnetoreception mechanism. Five properties of non-thermal EMF effects are discussed. These are that pulsed EMFs are, in most cases, more active than are non-pulsed EMFs; artificial EMFs are polarized and such polarized EMFs are much more active than non-polarized EMFs; dose-response curves are non-linear and non-monotone; EMF effects are often cumulative; and EMFs may impact young people more than adults. These general findings and data presented earlier on Wi-Fi effects were used to assess the Foster and Moulder (F&M) review of Wi-Fi. The F&M study claimed that there were seven important studies of Wi-Fi that each showed no effect. However, none of these were Wi-Fi studies, with each differing from genuine Wi-Fi in three distinct ways. F&M could, at most conclude that there was no statistically significant evidence of an effect. The tiny numbers studied in each of these seven F&M-linked studies show that each of them lack power to make any substantive conclusions. In conclusion, there are seven repeatedly found Wi-Fi effects which have also been shown to be caused by other similar EMF exposures. Each of the seven should be considered, therefore, as established effects of Wi-Fi.

“To inform the public usefully and honestly, you need to interview specialists in the many fields and consult often long, complicated reports, websites and books. Therefore the public is, in a sense, the victim of the journalist’s choice of sources. But to what end? This remains a question anyone reading Vegter’s columns need to ask.” The quote is from an article by Don Pinnock (21st of June 2016) “Calling out Ivo Vegter’s fractious fulminations” https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/opinionista/2016-06-21-calling-out-ivo-vegters-fractious-fulminations01/#.Wekqkbi3uX2

In a review of Vegter’s book ‘Extreme Environment’ the Mail and Guardian’s environmental writer Sipho Kings took him to task for cherry-picking facts to support his argument and world view.

The following article is a sterling example of the issues Mr Vegter stands accused of: ”The Campaign against killer radio waves” https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/opinionista/2017-09-20-the-campaign-against-killer-radio-waves/#.Wemwtri3tCk

As pointed out in Pinnock’s criticism, Vegter relies on unscientific sources and cherry-picking to support his claims. Generalised statements and lack of proper research are the two main culprits.

Let’s look at some of Vegter’s statements:

Vegter: “Some people steadfastly believe that radio waves from cell phone towers, electrical wires and microwave ovens make them sick. They cite symptoms such as insomnia, headaches, muscle pain, and nausea. Some say they cause cancer. And all these people are wrong.”

“They cite symptoms such as insomnia, headaches”

Yes they do Mr Vegter, and they are not the only ones. These facts are well recorded in studies.

One example of many: (ALAZAWI 2011, SHAHBAZI-GAHROUEI et al. 2014). The frequency of health symptoms was compared between residents living within 300m of the cell antenna site to those living farther away than 300m. The identical results of both studies: “Most of the health complaints such as nausea, headache, dizziness, irritability, discomfort, nervousness, depression, sleep disturbance, memory loss and lowering of libido were statistically significantly more often reported by residents living near a base station (≤ 300m distance) compared to those living in a distance of more than 300m to a base station. The authors suggested that mobile phone base stations should not be sited closer than 300m to residences to minimize exposure of the residents” (EMF-Portal on the study by SHAHBAZI-GAHROUEI et al. 2014).

Why do you ignore the many cell tower studies that indicate harm, Mr Vegter? Are you unaware that these studies, published in medical journals exist or do you deliberately choose to ignore it? Willful ignorance perhaps?

The 2004 Naila cell tower study (EGER et al. 2004) (again, not the only one) showed an increased cancer risk.

Vegter: “Some say these cause cancer”

Yes indeed Mr Vegter! There are studies which found a significant link between exposure to non-ionizing radiation and cancer. We believe you disregard and discredit the preliminary findings of the NTP cell phone radiation study, the final results of which will be published beginning 2018. (More about that in Part 2.)

So, we will exlude it and refer you to: Correspondence: Global Patterns Cancers of the Brain and CNS: Global Patterns and Trend Incidence https://www.researchgate.net/publication/316059480_Correspondence_Cancers_of_the_brain_and_CNS_global_patterns_and_trends_in_incidence-Electromagnetic_Fields_EMFs_and_Cancer

Bortkiewicz et al. have recently performed a meta-analysis and reported that their findings supported the hypothesis that long-term use of mobile phones was linked to increased risk of intracranial tumors.

Another meta-analysis performed recently by Wang and Guo showed a signicant association between mobile phone use (> 5 years use) and the risk of glioma. Furthermore, Yakymenko et al. have previously reviewed the published data on the carcinogenic effects of long term exposure to low intensity microwave radiation. They stated that there were reports indicating that exposure to low intensity microwaves could lead to cancer progression in laboratory animals and humans. They also stated that the carcinogenic effect of these radiations was more prominent for long term exposures (> 10 years).

Moreover, as Miranda-Filho et al. had claimed, in the case of low frequency fields there are no firm conclusions at present, it is worth noting that the findings of a case-control study performed by Carlberg et al. on occupational exposure to extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields and glioma found an increased risk in late stage (promotion/progression) of astrocytoma grade IV. There are scientists who believe that we cannot see the fingerprint of any increase in brain cancer incidence at population-level. They focus on the point that mobile phones were introduced 30 years ago and became ubiquitous 20 years ago or so. Therefore, we should be high on the shoulder of any brain cancer temporal risk distribution by now, and if that risk were real and significant we should be able to see it, while we cannot. Based on the current evidence, it can be claimed that the fingerprint (increased brain cancers) is indeed visible now! “Mobile phone use has been increasing in Western developed societies (de Vocht et al., 2011;Khurana et al., 2009) as well as worldwide (Khurana et al., 2009), and in parallel, the incidence of certain types of brain cancers has also been increasing in the previous decades (Dobes et al., 2011; Zada et al., 2012)”. EMF-induced cancers cannot be limited to brain and CNS cancers and other cancers (e.g. thyroid cancers) should be taken in to account “This study has shown an increasing incidence of thyroid cancer in Sweden and the Nordic countries. Better diagnostic imaging cannot solely account for the increase”…

So while the debate is ongoing about carcinogenity, one fact is crystal clear; We cannot state that radio waves do NOT cause cancer. Mr. Vegter, your statement “And all those people are wrong” is also wrong.

Not all scientists perceive EHS to be “all in the mind” as you suggest. Study the work of Dr Belpomme, President of ARTAC, (Association of Treatment Against Cancer).

“At that time (this dates back to 2011), we concluded that psychological factors are possibly involved in EHS (S. M. J.
Another unsubstantiated statement: “Whatever the case, the science is clear: electromagnetic radiation of frequencies lower than visible light cannot plausibly cause significant harm to the human body”

They disagree with you, Mr Vegter. 235 scientists from 41 nations, in fact.

EMF Scientist Appeal: https://www.emfscientist.org/

Mr Vegter, you state: “…the mobile phone signals, which operate at similar frequencies to wi-fi and microwaves. As we’ve established, there is no plausible mechanism by which they can cause harm.”

As to the mechanism consider: DNA breaks, DNA damage, oxidative cell stress, the formation of free radicals, the polarization of cell membranes, opening of the blood-brain barrier, calcium voltage channels, thermal and non-thermal effects. For example: “a broad biological potential of ROS and other free radicals, including both their mutagenic effects and their signaling regulatory potential, makes RFR a potentially hazardous factor for human health” (YAKYMENKO et al. 2015, p. 12). The EMF exposure-related increase in oxidative damage already occurs, according to Yakymenko et al., “at levels thousands of times below the exposure limits in the non-thermal range at a power density of 0.1 μW/cm2 (= 1000 μW/m squared) and specific absorption range (SAR) of 3 μW/kg.1 These levels are well below exposure limits and exposure levels users experience during normal operation of mobile devices, routers, cell towers, and Wi-Fi hotspots.”

Another unsubstatiated statement: “This means that to be harmed by a cellphone tower, you’d have to climb up the tower and position yourself directly in front of the transmitter.”

No words necessary. Read the above.

Vegter: “All the evidence, published in academic journals rather than popular magazines, supports the conclusion that radio waves, cell phone transmissions, and microwave ovens are entirely harmless.”

All the evidence? In other words, Mr Vegter, you state that there is not one single study published in a medical journal that indicates harm?

What a sad day for journalism in South Africa.

Some facts to consider:

In most studies only the impact of a single frequency is examined, but in real life all living organisms are exposed to a mixture of frequencies.

Radiation from wireless communication technologies results in combination effects with other environmental exposures like amalgam, nitric oxides, fine particulate matter, lead, glyphosate, aluminum, fluorides, cadmium, plasticizers. Combination effects between ionizing and no nionizing radiation are also to be considered as a possible cause of multiple disease phenomena, which can be observed in soldiers and staff members of radar facilities. (MÄMPEL et al. 2015) We have to keep in mind therefore the role of electromagnetic radiation as an environmental pollutant.

(GIBSON 2016):To psychologize persons with electromagnetic hypersensitivity is discriminatory.

Aviation Health & Safety in the Digital Age Radio-frequency (RF) Exposure from Mobile Devices and In flight WiFi A New Human Factor? http://docplayer.net/13008781-Aviation-health-safety-in-the-digital-age-radio-frequency-rf-exposure-from-mobile-devices-and-in-flight-wifi-a-new-human-factor.html

Excerpts:
There is evidence of adverse effects on human health and performance from exposure to electro magnetic radiation, especially radio frequency/microwave radiation from mobile communication technology. So the position that the “low level” exposures from WiFi and mobile phones are within government standards (based only on thermal levels) does not dismiss the evidence of biological damage that occurs with non
thermal exposure levels.

Who will be monitoring accumulated exposures? Is anyone monitoring WiFi enabled aircraft to track the flight crew and passengers for potentially related occurrences /symptoms in flight?

Hans Scheiner, MD
Environmental Medicine Expert
“Equipping aircraft with WiFi is a dangerous experiment.
Even quite low levels of radio frequency radiation from WiFi and mobile devices can open up the blood brain barrier and cause a lot of harm, including miniature edemas detroying brain cells which cannot be renewed. This damage presents an increased risk of neurodegenerative conditions including Parkinson’s.
Electro hypersensitivity (EHS) is another is another issue.People with this condition may faint, feel dizzy or their vision might be impaired.People may also experience nausea, lack of concentration, muscle weakness and skin reactions.”

Professor Wilhelm Mosgoeller, PhD University of Vienna “Wrong responses were given within shorter time periods (experiments with healthy human subjects and RF exposure)”

Professor Olle Johansson, PhD of the Karolinska Institute “chromosome damage, impact on the concentration capacity, and decrease in short term memory.”

Cardiologist Stephen T. Sinatra, M.D., F.A.C.C. “We know that the heart is sensitive to,and can be adversely affected by the same frequency used for WiFi (2.4 GHz)at levels a fraction of federal guidelines (less than 1%).I would like to see tests on pilots for potential cardiac and cognitive effects.”

COMMERCIAL PILOTS MAY BE EXPERIENCING WiFi RELATED SYMPTOMS

First State In The Nation: Maryland State Advisory Council Recommends Reducing School WiFi

Children’s environmental health experts respond to new US study linking wireless radiation to cancer after the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reducing cell phone exposures.
After reviewing new and growing evidence on health risks of wireless radiation, the Maryland State Children’s Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council (CEHPAC) issued a Report advising the Department of Education to recommend local school districts reduce classroom wireless radiation exposures by providing wired—rather than wireless—internet connections. CEHPAC’s health experts include Governor appointed pediatricians, Maryland State House/Senate appointees and representatives of the Department of Education and Department of Health. The Council cited the recent US National Toxicology Program (NTP) findings of increased rates of rare malignant cancers in animals, as well as children’s unique vulnerability to the radiation. While several countries, such as France, Israel and Cyprus, already have such protective measures in place, this action to issue recommendations to reduce classroom wireless exposures is the first by an expert statebody in the United States.

The Children’s Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council recommends:

“The Maryland State Department of Education should recommend that local school systems consider using wired devices“ “WiFi can be turned off” and instead “a wired local area network (LAN) can provide a reliable and secure form of networking…without any microwave electromagnetic field exposure.”
New construction and renovations: “If a new classroom is to be built, or electrical work is to be carried out in an existing classroom, network cables can be added at the same time, providing wired (not wireless) network access with minimal extra cost and time.”
The Maryland State Department of Education should recommend that local school systems use strategies to minimize exposures: “Have children place devices on desks to serve as barrier between the device and children’s bodies; Locate laptops in the classroom in a way that keeps pupil heads as far away from the laptop screens (where the antennas are) as practicable; Consider using screens designed to reduce eyestrain; Consider using a switch to shut down the router when it is not in use”.
“The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene should provide suggestions to the public on ways to reduce exposure: Sit away from WiFi routers, especially when people are using it to access the internet. Turn off the wireless on your laptop when you are not using it. Turn off WiFi on smartphones and tablets when not surfing the web. Switch tablets to airplane mode to play games or watch videos stored on the device.”
“The General Assembly should consider funding education and research on electromagnetic radiation and health as schools add WiFi to classrooms.”
The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene should “ask the United States Department of Health and Human Services to formally petition the FCC to revisit the exposure limit to ensure it is protective of children’s health and that it relies on current science.”
The Report should be shared with the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Federal Communications Commission, Maryland State Department of Education and Maryland General Assembly

“While this report focused on WiFi radiation in schools, there are additional concerns about mobile phones and cell phone towers. CEHPAC plans to take a look at these broader issues over the next year,” the Report states.

Referring to the fact that US wireless public exposure limits were set in 1996, without testing for long term safety, the CEHPAC Council Report also stated that “decades-old standards need updating in light of new science.” Such statements are in line with the American Academy of Pediatrics, which has also called for a regulatory review and states that children’s brains are less mature and can absorb proportionately twice the wireless radiation as an adult because of children’s thinner skulls that contain more fluid. In response to the 2016 NTP study findings of a cancer link, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Consumer Reports, Obstetricians and several Medical Associations also have issued recommendations to reduce wireless exposures to children. The American Academy of Pediatrics has also called on the United States government to review wireless exposure regulations and set standards that protect children and pregnant women.

“Our children’s healthy future rests on the responsible actions of today,” stated Theodora Scarato MSW, of Environmental Health Trust, who brought the issue to the Council in Spring of 2014. “21st century learning should include 21st century science,” Scarato points out about research showing wireless alters brain development in addition to cancer. “Corded non-wireless connections in school are an important part of a safe and healthy school environment, respecting not only our children but also the teachers and staff.”

The Council heard testimony from health organizations and from parents who reside in multiple counties in the State of Maryland, including Montgomery County, Prince Georges County, Anne Arundel County, Baltimore County and Howard County. The Council also received hundreds of pages of expert scientific material and comments prior to the final Report, which the Council has posted on their website.

“Parents have a right to know if there is an environmental hazard in the classroom and actions that can be taken to reduce exposure. The stakes are so high for our children, yet we are way behind what has been happening around the world. Over 20 countries have taken steps and in some cases passed legislation to protect their youngest and most vulnerable citizens and it is time we do the same for ours,” stated Montgomery County parent Laura Simon, pointing to countries like France, Cyprus and Israel.

Scarato described the process of how she brought the health issue of children’s exposures to wireless in schools to Maryland State agencies almost three years ago by first writing letters of concern about the school radiation exposures. “I was shocked to learn no government health agency had reviewed the issue from a health and safety standpoint considering how fast WiFi was being installed in schools across the State.” Dr. Sharfstein, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health, initially responded to Scarato’s concern, “[I]t is fair to say there are legitimate questions about the long term health implications of microwave radiation” and that the Department of Health “would be interested in the advice and counsel of groups such as the Children’s Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council.”

Scarato pointed out that the Education Department representative on the Council voted in favor of the CEHPAC recommendations to reduce wireless exposures.” The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) also had responded to Scarato’s initial concerns by referring her to CEHPAC which “exists for the purpose of identifying environmental hazards that may affect children’s health and recommending solutions to those hazards.”

In 2017, Maryland lawmakers will consider a bill to to create uniform screen safety guidelines for public schools “to protect children from the documented health hazards posed by daily use of digital devices.” Medical researchers are pointing to an array of psychological, emotional, and physiological psychological, emotional, and she see a logical health issues screens pose to children at the same time that schools are integrating wireless networks and one to one device initiatives into classrooms. In response to these concerns, many schools worldwide are replacing wireless systems with wired systems, limiting time children spend on screens and developing policy to address health concerns posed by school wireless networks.

Mobile phone radiation, an underestimated disease factor
www.buergerwelle.de, 18 January 2017 (translated from German by Google with grammatical corrections)

Lecture given by Peter Schlegel dipl. Ing. ETH at the special event “Electrosmog and its effects on the body” organized by the Swiss medical association SSAAMP on October 13, 2016 in Zurich. Participants were around 100 medical professionals. In the conclusion of his lecture, Peter Schlegel listed necessary measures to be taken in public health and medical practice:

– The establishment of “white” (mobile-free) zones for severely affected persons is urgently necessary as a survival measure, although a “ghetto effect” is not ideal. In the medium to long term, the mobile spectrum must be massively reduced across the country.

– The university education of doctors must be adapted immediately. In electro-medical applications, electrosensitivity – based on experience – has long been recognized and therapeutically relevant.

– The cooperation of physicians with independent measuring and consulting specialists (i.e. building biologists with professional measurement training) should be intensified. For such professionals, a recognized profession is to be created in order to increase competency and supply capacity.

– Hospitals, retirement homes, rehabilitation clinics, etc. are to be kept free of mobile radiation, especially Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and DECT radiation, as an immediate measure in at least one part of the rooms.

– Physicians are encouraged to consult the EUROPAEM guideline in their practice. Patients should be properly informed about the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) and electrosensitivity (EHS) (refer to AefU’s [Doctors for the Protection of the Environment] and concerned organizations’ flyers in waiting rooms).

The lecture was a version of 62 lecture notes supplemented by additional presentations (not presented at the event for reasons of time). For a better understanding, some slides with explanations and comments were added at the oral presentation. The presentations were based on Swiss conditions.

The lecture material is hereby released by the author as a PDF file [in German] for further use. The author asks for notification when elements of this presentation are adopted for public use. Please use source code.

Presenters:
– Ao Univ. Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Mosgöller [Medical University of Vienna]: “Genotoxic effects of high-frequency electromagnetic fields – a project report”
– Prof. Dr. Dr. habil. Klaus Buchner MEP: “Effects of high-frequency electromagnetic radiation on hormones, neurotransmitters and oxidative stress”

The lectures were held before an above-average audience of medical specialists. This interest was in pleasant contrast to the well-known defensive attitude of many conventional physicians towards the subject… Countless electrosensitive people complain that they are not taken seriously by their doctor. Where medical faculties use a lecturer close to the mobile and electricity sectors to present this topic, the young medical generation is being indoctrinated by this unfortunate misunderstanding of the facts.

By Dr Erica Mallery Blythe.
We are currently witnessing the largest change to the Earth’s electromagnetic environment that has ever taken place in human history. Given that basic household electricity, which was the first anthropogenic (man-made) electromagnetic field (EMF), only became prolific during the twentieth century, artificial EMF has barely seen one generation from cradle to grave. The use of higher frequency microwave devices such as mobile telephony, Wi-Fi and smart meters, have suddenly become commonplace, despite serious health concerns. Could this be the greatest public health disaster in human history?

Devices that emit RF radiation

Common devices that emit RF radiation include (but not exclusively) DECT phones , Wi-Fi routers, wireless computers, E-readers and VDUs, Bluetooth, security systems, fluorescent lighting, Smart meters, RFID tags and systems and a range of novel gadgets including wearables that appear in shops on a daily basis .

The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines devised in 1998 are currently used in the UK as a ‘safe limit’ for exposure, even thought they were not designed for this purpose. They protect against thermally induced (tissue heating) damage but not the ‘non-thermal’ effects which occur at much lower intensities. Many thousands of papers now demonstrate serious biological effects at non-thermal levels, orders of magnitude below current ICNIRP guidelines, but despite this, appropriate ‘biologically based’ protective safety limits have not been provided in the UK. In addition to neglecting non-thermal effects, these guidelines also fail to take into account cumulative effects, modulation effects, interference effects, reflection/conduction effects, frequency and intensity windows, chemical synergy and other important characteristics now known to enhance biological disruption See link for more: http://www.camexpo.co.uk/electromagnetic-radiation-modern-health-hazard/

Abstract

Over the past decades, the use of common sources of electromagnetic fields such as Wi-Fi routers and mobile phones has been increased enormously all over the world. Increased release of mercury from dental amalgam restorations after exposure to electromagnetic fields such as those generated by MRI and mobile phones has been reported by our team and other researchers. We have recently shown that some of the papers which reported no increased release of mercury after MRI, may have some methodological errors. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26544100
