Abstract

The effect of ELF-MF on human health is still controversial, particularly as regards long-term health effects like cancer. The literature does suggest, however, that they could be involved in the occurrence of brain tumors, although results concerning residential exposure are scarce. Our objective was to investigate the association between residential proximity to power lines and brain tumors among adults in France by using a geographical information system.CERENAT is a population-based case-control study carried out in France in 2004–2006. We used geographical data sources on power line location to create exposure scores based on distance between residence and power lines, and on the number of lines near residences. Conditional logistic regression for matched sets was used to estimate Odds Ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI).We found significant associations between cumulated duration living at <50 m to high voltage lines and: i) all brain tumors (OR 2.94; 95%CI 1.28–6.75); ii) glioma (OR 4.96; 95%CI 1.56–15.77). Further investigations are needed, particularly to improve the quality and availability of geographical and technical data on power lines.

Extract

Despite this study’s limitations, our results strongly suggest that the risk of brain tumor, and particularly gliomas could be associated with residential ELF-MF exposure estimated by proximity of power lines, as several previous studies have already pointed out. This study demonstrates how public cartographic data can be used in epidemiological studies to estimate residential exposure, even if they were not designed for this purpose. The limitations resulting from the original purpose of these data could be overcome by combination with other data sources, such as power line characteristics or metrology to enhance exposure assessment accuracy.

Abstract

The National Toxicology Program tested two common radiofrequency radiation (RFR) modulations emitted by cellular telephones in a 2-year rodent cancer bioassay that included interim assessments of additional animals for genotoxicity endpoints. Male and female Hsd:Sprague Dawley SD rats and B6C3F1/N mice were exposed from Gestation day 5 or Postnatal day 35, respectively, to code division multiple access (CDMA) or global system for mobile modulations over 18 hr/day, at 10-min intervals, in reverberation chambers at specific absorption rates of 1.5, 3, or 6 W/kg (rats, 900 MHz) or 2.5, 5, or 10 W/kg (mice, 1,900 MHz). After 19 (rats) or 14 (mice) weeks of exposure, animals were examined for evidence of RFR-associated genotoxicity using two different measures. Using the alkaline (pH > 13) comet assay, DNA damage was assessed in cells from three brain regions, liver cells, and peripheral blood leukocytes; using the micronucleus assay, chromosomal damage was assessed in immature and mature peripheral blood erythrocytes. Results of the comet assay showed significant increases in DNA damage in the frontal cortex of male mice (both modulations), leukocytes of female mice (CDMA only), and hippocampus of male rats (CDMA only). Increases in DNA damage judged to be equivocal were observed in several other tissues of rats and mice. No significant increases in micronucleated red blood cells were observed in rats or mice. In conclusion, these results suggest that exposure to RFR is associated with an increase in DNA damage.

Abstract

During the use of handheld mobile and cordless phones, the brain is the main target of radiofrequency (RF) radiation. An increased risk of developing glioma and acoustic neuroma has been found in human epidemiological studies. Primarily based on these findings, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) at the World Health Organization (WHO) classified in May, 2011 RF radiation at the frequency range of 30 kHz‑300 GHz as a ‘possible’ human carcinogen, Group 2B. A carcinogenic potential for RF radiation in animal studies was already published in 1982. This has been confirmed over the years, more recently in the Ramazzini Institute rat study. An increased incidence of glioma in the brain and malignant schwannoma in the heart was found in the US National Toxicology Program (NTP) study on rats and mice. The NTP final report is to be published; however, the extended reports are published on the internet for evaluation and are reviewed herein in more detail in relation to human epidemiological studies. Thus, the main aim of this study was to compare earlier human epidemiological studies with NTP findings, including a short review of animal studies. We conclude that there is clear evidence that RF radiation is a human carcinogen, causing glioma and vestibular schwannoma (acoustic neuroma). There is some evidence of an increased risk of developing thyroid cancer, and clear evidence that RF radiation is a multi‑site carcinogen. Based on the Preamble to the IARC Monographs, RF radiation should be classified as carcinogenic to humans, Group 1.

Yet they fail to warn users of any potential risk in their ads and packaging.

British Telecom, which owns EE, tells investors starkly in its 2017 annual report: “We can’t provide absolute assurance that research in the future won’t establish links between radio frequency emissions and health risks.”

And Nokia says: “There have been some research results that indicated the possibility that electromagnetic waves emitted from mobile devices and base stations have adverse health effects, such as increasing the risk of cancer.”

The news comes after we revealed brain cancer patient Neil Whitfield, 60, is the first Briton to sue a phone maker and could win up to £1million from Nokia if successful.

Mr Whitfield said: “If companies are warning investors there is a possible risk they should be warning people who use their phones and networks.

“They are being selective with the truth and have decided those with money are more important than the general public.”

A court in Italy recently ruled a link between tumours and mobiles and the International Agency for Research into Cancer says they are a “possible carcinogenic.”

And in France, Orange has recalled around 90,000 Hapi 30 phones because of the device’s radiation level.

Devra Davis, president of the Environmental Health Trust, said: “Financial threats from litigation are growing in step with scientific evidence linking phones to health damages.

“Further still, the Italian court decision indicates any firm that requires mobile use as a condition of work faces major liability.”

Blackberry and Nokia warn shareholders of possible legal action in reports to the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Nokia says despite adhering to regulations “concerns over the adverse effects on health… could make it difficult to acquire and retain customers”.

Vodafone says there is “no evidence” of harm but adds: “A change to this view could result in… impacts.” Blackberry says “perceived risks” could affects sales and lead to legal battles.

Most studies find no link with cancer but others claim they increase the risk of brain cancer.

Mr Whitfield blames Nokia phones for giving him an acoustic neuroma on a nerve between his inner ear and brain.

“His case could open the floodgates and he said: “Phone companies don’t give a jot about health.”

“I’m in the autumn of my life but I worry about the next generation who spend hours each day glued to their phones.”

Nokia is fighting his claim and said safety “has always been a key consideration”, adding: “All products comply with exposure guidelines and limits set by public health authorities.”

Scientists have concluded their peer review of the draft reports of the $25 Million US government National Toxicology Program (NTP) study on cell phone radiation.

Recommendations by the expert panel:

The peer review panel has recommended that the NTP upgrade the level of evidence that GSM cell phone radiation is linked to malignant schwannoma in the heart in male rats from SOME evidence to CLEAR evidence. The NTP staff had recommended the “some” designation in its draft report. The panel made the same recommendation for CDMA RF radiation (with respect to malignant schwannoma in the heart in male rats) – upgrading the evidence to CLEAR. In addition, the panel recommended that NTP upgrade the evidence for malignant schwannoma in the heart of female rats exposed to GSM cell phone radiation from NO evidence to EQUIVOCAL evidence.

The panel also recommended that the NTP upgrade the evidence for malignant glioma (brain tumors) in male rats exposed to GSM cell phone radiation from EQUIVOCAL to SOME EVIDENCE.

Near the close of the first day of the peer review meeting of the NTP RF animal study, Ron Melnick, who led the team that designed the study, said from the floor: “The purpose of the study was to challenge the null hypothesis that are no adverse health effects at minimal exposure intensities. The null hypothesis has been disproved.” The point is that you can argue about the nature and extent of the health risks, but not whether they exist.

Excellent advice from Dr. Adler: “we cannot wait lifetimes to determine that cellphones cause brain cancer. The FDA must carry out risk assessment now including both néoplastic & noneoplastic tissues.”

“It should most likely lead to a reduction in exposure limits,” said Ronald Melnick, the NTP scientist who designed the study before he retired nine years ago.

“Enough is enough, how many more deaths would be needed before serious action is taken? Over the past 15 years more and more data have been accumulating. Today the external peer reviewers of the National Toxicology Program voted to increase the level of evidence for the causal role of radiofrequency radiation for several tumors and other negative health effects. It’s time for action,” stated Dr. Annie Sasco MD, DrPH, former Chief of Research Unit of Epidemiology for Cancer Prevention at the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization and medical advisor to Environmental Health Trust (EHT).

Table of recommendations of the peer review panel:

Joel Moskowitz http://www.saferemr.com/2018/01/national-toxicology-program-peer-public.html has compiled a table with all 20 recommendations of NTP’s peer review panel, side-by-side with those in NTP’s draft report. 180328_summary of NTP expert panel recommendations

The FDA responds:

The FDA’s director of the office of science and engineering, Edward Margerrison, attended the meeting and warned afterwards against forming rash conclusions based on Wednesday’s votes. “We’re taking a responsible approach,” he said. “We’re not gonna knee-jerk on anything.”

The FDA will translate the rodent findings to human health risks, and the Federal Communications Commission will decide whether the FDA conclusions are serious enough to warrant setting lower emissions standards for U.S. cellphones or taking other precautions.

EMFSA notes the following: upon the release of the NTP draft reports (even BEFORE the outcome of the peer review) the Director of FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Jeffrey Shuren stated: “We believe the current safety limits for cell phones are acceptable for protecting the public health.”

Abstract

An ecological modelling paper by Chapman and colleagues in Cancer Epidemiology concludes that observed increases in the incidence of brain cancer in Australia are unlikely to be related to mobile phone use [1]. Their conclusion fails to take account of tumor location, and is at variance with a meta-analysis of 11 methodologically stronger studies from both the Hardell group and the international Interphone group with researchers in 13 countries, presented by Khurana and colleagues [2]. Criteria for inclusion in the Khurana et al. analysis were (1) publication in a peer reviewed journal, (2) inclusion of participants using their cell phones for more than 10 years, to ensure a minimum 10 year latency period, and (3) incorporation of a laterality analysis of longterm users (i.e. brain tumor site relative to the side of the head preferred for cell phone usage). This meta-analysis calculated an overall odds ratio of 1.9 (95% CI 1.4–2.4) for the risk of glioma for cell phone usage on the ipsilateral side, and 1.6 (CI 1.1–2.4) for acoustic neuroma. A preview of its findings led the editor of the journal Surgical Neurology to publish an editorial titled “Cell phones more dangerous than cigarettes! [sic]” [3]. Subsequent good quality studies have strengthened, not weakened this observation, with one showing an odds ratio for glioma increased to 3.0 (CI 1.7–5.2) in the > 25 year latency group [4]; the French CERENAT collaborative case-control study demonstrating an odds ratio for glioma of 2.89 (CI 1.41–5.93) in the heaviest users (>896 h) [5], and a third demonstrating significantly poorer outcome in patients with Astrocytoma grade IV (Glioblastoma Multiforme = GBM), in heavy compared with light cell phone users, when the latency was longer (>20 years), and particularly when first cell phone usage was before the age of 20 years [6]. The WHO International Agency on Research for Cancer (IARC), using strict criteria, has classified Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields from cell phones as a possible (Group 2B) carcinogen to humans (same as lead, DDT, and 2,4 D) in 2011 [7], with a reasoned request by the Hardell group to upgrade this to a clear Group 1 carcinogen in 2013 [8]. This latter group has also consistently called on the International regulating bodies to update safety standards for human non-ionising radiation/radiofrequency radiation (RFR) exposure. On 26 May 2016 the US National Toxicology Program under the NIH released important partial findings from their recent study of the effects of radiofrequency radiation on carcinogenesis in rats [9]. The study design used the standard frequencies and modulations available to the public from the US telecommunications industry.

Wireless-enabled headsets that connect to the internet can provide remote transcribing of patient examination notes. Audio and video can be captured and transmitted by wireless signals sent from the computer screen in the frame of the glasses. But using wireless glass-type devices can expose the user to a specific absorption rates (SAR) of 1.11–1.46 W/kg of radiofrequency radiation. That RF intensity is as high as or higher than RF emissions of some cell phones. Prolonged use of cell phones used ipsilaterally at the head has been associated with statistically significant increased risk of glioma and acoustic neuroma. Using wireless glasses for extended periods to teach, to perform surgery, or conduct patient exams will expose the medical professional to similar RF exposures which may impair brain performance, cognition and judgment, concentration and attention and increase the risk for brain tumors. The quality of medical care may be compromised by extended use of wireless-embedded devices in health care settings. Both medical professionals and their patients should know the risks of such devices and have a choice about allowing their use during patient exams. Transmission of sensitive patient data over wireless networks may increase the risk of hacking and security breaches leading to losses of private patient medical and financial data that are strictly protected under HIPPA health information privacy laws.
