A moratorium on the deployment of 5G technology in Bermuda has been lifted by the Regulatory Authority.

It paves the way for telecom companies with the appropriate licence to roll-out Fifth Generation wireless technology, which allows for faster data speeds than 4G networks used on the island today.

The RA last year put a moratorium on the deployment of the technology and launched a public consultation.

It has now conducted what it said was an “extensive review process”, which included a report from an independent advisory panel.

In the report, the panel concluded that radiation safety science did not support the view that 5G will be harmful to people, or to flora or fauna. The panel recommended the lifting of the moratorium on 5G roll-out.

Three amendments proposing to have a “moratorium” on 5G deployment in France – first spotted by news websites Numerama and Next INpact – were tabled before the French National Assembly during its committee’s examination of the bill to combat climate change. EURACTIV France reports.

Scores of testifiers came out in July to support a previous nonbinding resolution calling for telecommunication companies and public utilities operating in the county to halt 5G development until independent research and testing concludes it is safe for humans.

Many testifiers, and subsequent writers of letters to the editors of the island newspapers, didn’t seem to understand the resolution that passed 8-1 was merely a statement of position by the council and had no authority to require anything of the telecommunications companies.

Abstract

The fifth generation (5G) for wireless communication is about to be deployed worldwide in spite of no thorough studies being made on the potential risks to human health and the environment. The implementation seems to be driven mainly by business interests, not considering mounting public anxiety on the associated risks. In Estonia, an appeal on a moratorium was signed by 1,122 subjects, forcing a hearing in the Social Affairs Commission and the Environment Commission of Estonian Parliament on June 4, 2019. The hearing lasted for 1 h and 40 min. The whole hearing may be found on the web. It clearly demonstrated that decision‑making bodies base their decisions and act on expert statements that tend to be biased and formed by a cartel of members instead of their own science‑based evaluation. Thus, the hearing revealed a lack of knowledge among the Commission members on the risks involved with the use of 5G wireless communication that is exemplified herein. This may create negative consequences for human health and the environment in the future.

Several NGOs on Wednesday called for a moratorium on the deployment of 5G, fearing risks to health but also consequences “out of control” on the society of this technology expected as a revolution in mobile telephony.
