<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These items originate from a long-term home-based research and environmental design project focused on photobiomodulation (PBM), therapeutic lighting environments, low-EMF living systems, water quality and transformation, sensory regulation, and wellness-oriented home design.</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">For Alexander</h6>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alexander,13, has been living with glioblastoma since he was 11. His tumour is now inoperable and pressing against the optic nerve behind his left eye, leaving him clinically blind.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite facing challenges no child should ever endure, Alexander continues to think beyond himself — inspiring everyone around him with his courage and generosity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">•5G Maritime is specifically designed for maritime environments like coastal areas, offshore platforms, ships, and other seafaring operations.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">•Current implementations of 5G in marine contexts, such as in fisheries, tourism, and naval operations, might focus on economic and logistical benefits rather than studying ecological impacts. Balancing infrastructure development with conservation efforts is crucial to mitigate these impacts and sustain marine biodiversity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Features of Maritime 5G</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Depending on the providers, maritime 5G may include:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>•5G-Advanced, also known as 5.5G</strong>: An enhancement to standard 5G for improved connectivity and efficiency.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>•Hybrid Infrastructure</strong>: Combining terrestrial 5G infrastructure along coastlines with satellite-based systems to extend connectivity to open seas and remote areas.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>•Massive device connectivity</strong>: Supporting IoT (Internet of Things) applications, including advanced setups utilizing higher frequencies for high-bandwidth activities near the shore, such as IoT-enabled smart ports and vessel tracking systems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>•Massive MIMO </strong><strong>(Massive Multiple Input, Multiple Output)</strong>: Enhancing beamforming and spatial multiplexing to improve network capacity, coverage, and energy efficiency.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>•Spectrum Aggregation: </strong>Combining spectrum from different bands (e.g., low, mid, and high) including millimeter waves.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Maritime 5G Marketing Incentives</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maritime 5G is marketed as providing high-speed, low-latency connectivity to support diverse applications such as:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Navigation, safety, and tourism.</li>



<li>Environmental monitoring and efficient operation of maritime systems.</li>



<li>Smart city and port promotion.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Green networking technologies, such as AI-driven energy management and base station sleep modes, are also promoted to reduce carbon footprints.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Possible Environmental Impacts of Maritime 5G</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Coastal 5G developments require new antennas, upgrades and infrastructure. Higher frequency bands, such as millimeter waves, have limited water penetration but may interact with the ocean&#8217;s surface, potentially affecting small organisms like plankton. Although direct studies are lacking, these interactions could lead to ecosystem-level changes, warranting further investigation. Current guidelines largely ignore non-human species, emphasizing the need for targeted research to understand and mitigate potential risks.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">•<strong>Noise Pollution</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The integration of communication networks, including hybrid systems involving satellites, drones, and underwater equipment, contributes to noise pollution. This can disrupt marine species that rely on sound for navigation, communication, and mating.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">•<strong>Light Pollution</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Urban coastal development increasingly exposes marine ecosystems to artificial light. Coastal cities, offshore oil rigs, and ships flood the ocean with artificial light, impacting a wide range of sea creatures. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">5G maritime projects have been announced for these areas, providing a backdrop for evaluating potential ecological impacts alongside technological advancements.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">South Africa’s coastline is home to over 13,000 marine species, many of which are protected within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) on the West Coast. These include:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Langebaan Lagoon:</strong> Known for its rich marine invertebrate fauna with over 400 species.</li>



<li><strong>Mossel Bay:</strong> A haven for marine life, including Southern Right Whales that calve in the bay. Other species frequently spotted include Humpback Whales, Killer Whales, and Bryde’s Whales. The area also supports Great White Sharks, various dolphin species, and a Cape Fur Seal colony of over 2,500 individuals on Seal Island.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite these natural riches, challenges persist. Whale strandings around Cape Town and injuries from ship strikes near Saldanha Bay and Cape Town’s ports highlight the urgent need for conservation. While the causes of these events vary, they underscore the necessity of protecting South Africa’s marine environment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Protecting Marine Ecosystems</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy in Action, endorsed at the 2024 Ocean Literacy World Conference in Venice, emphasizes the need for policies that respect the ocean’s inherent rights to exist, flourish, and regenerate. To achieve this, urban and coastal planning must adopt a participatory approach, engaging governments and stakeholders through Ocean Literacy programs tailored for municipalities, engineers, architects, local businesses, and residents. By prioritizing community-centered strategies, we can safeguard coastal and submerged natural and cultural heritage, ensuring that this invaluable legacy becomes a cornerstone of a more sustainable ocean future.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Development of communications technologies translates into a wide variety of objects, connected devices and wireless services using radio frequencies: baby monitors, security cameras headphones, glasses, watches, key rings, blood pressure monitors… This exponential growth is not without raising questions that are the subject of permanent news both from a scientific and regulatory point of view and from a political and societal point of view.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The growth in uses is likely to increase the exposure of the general population via new fixed transmitters, new mobile equipment or new uses (e.g. equipment worn close to the body, even inside the body or even the skin).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For several years, ANSES has been involved in expert appraisal activities in almost all areas of the<br>non-ionizing electromagnetic spectrum: from extremely low frequencies to millimeter waves. With<br>regard to the deployment of 5G technologies, the Agency collaborated with the ANFR to collect the<br>first public exposure measurements taken before and after the commissioning of 5G on 1,500 sites<br>located in France. In addition, from 20 April to 1 June 2021, it carried out an open consultation during which citizens could make contributions and comments on the expert report published in April 2021. Hence ANSES&#8217;s updated opinion of February 2022 supported by an expert report supplemented and enriched with new data.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In view of the rapid evolution of technologies which leads to the exploitation of new frequency<br>bands (such as those of 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz for 5G, in France), it seems essential, on the one hand,<br>to adapt the methodologies for measuring and evaluating exposure and, on the other hand, to study the biological and health effects of electromagnetic waves in these frequency bands. To date, the number of users and 5G traffic are still limited in France in the 3.5 GHz band, while the 26 GHz band is not yet exploited by mobile telephone operators. ANSES&#8217;s mission is part of a developing context and the data available in the literature are still scarce.<br><br>To estimate the impact of 5G technologies on health and the environment, the Agency regularly<br>continues its scientific monitoring and updating work. Following the recent production of numerous<br>data from new mechanistic studies, but also from epidemiological studies such as Mobi-kids<br>(December 2021) or the key study of the &#8220;National Toxicology Program&#8221; (August 2020) on the<br>development of tumors in rodents exposed to mobile telephone signals, an expert appraisal<br>examining the carcinogenic effects of radiofrequencies is underway at ANSES, all frequency bands<br>combined.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finally, ANSES invests in the production of new scientific knowledge by supporting research on the health effects of radiofrequencies. This Cahier de la Recherche presents eleven projects funded between 2017 and 2020 via the call for research projects;  “radiofrequencies and health” of the national environment-health-work research program (PNR EST). So-called exploratory investigation projects (PIE) also make it possible to acquire new knowledge in response to questions raised by civil society, for example on the symptoms declared near relay antennas, hypersensitivity to electromagnetic fields or even the exposure to new mobile telecommunications signals including 5G. The need for this type of project was identified thanks to the dialogue initiated since 2011 with associative or professional stakeholders within the framework of the “Radiofrequency and health” dialogue committee.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since 2017 there is general scientific consensus that <span style="text-decoration: underline;">light</span> has the most significant outcome on altering any biochemistry in life, either positively or negatively.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So-called “white” LEDs emit a portion of their light at wavelengths below 500 nm (blue). These wavelengths are not beneficial to human and environmental <span style="text-decoration: underline;">health</span>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 2022 National WHO EMF Project Report IAC-ZA&nbsp; mandates that streetlights are modified/adjusted by changing from an energy flux model (white) to a <span style="text-decoration: underline;">photon flux model</span> (orange/red). UV is included too and flicker. A photon flux model results in significantly <span style="text-decoration: underline;">lower energy inputs</span> and is much more beneficial to human health.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mounting evidence indicates that <span style="text-decoration: underline;">disruption of circadian regulation</span> is associated with a wide variety of adverse health consequences, including increased risk for premature death, cancer, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular dysfunction, immune dysregulation, reproductive problems, mood disorders, and learning deficits. Of particular interest here is <span style="text-decoration: underline;">obesity</span> and <span style="text-decoration: underline;">breast cancer</span>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The light is so bright that it is impossible to spend time outside at night in the garden.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Imagine the frustration- attempts to resolve the matter are ignored;&nbsp; enquiries to the municipality in regards to the specifications of the&nbsp;light are ignored or sent from pillar to post.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The public is aware that some smart cities incorporate sensors for air quality, pedestrian traffic, monitoring electricity use and more. In addition some streetlights are equipped for telecommunication purposes. Is it a wonder then that conspiracy theories flourish &#8211; when there is such a lack of <span style="text-decoration: underline;">transparency</span> and <span style="text-decoration: underline;">cooperation</span>?</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“<em><strong>Done well, LEDs could save the planet, in the sense of reining in light pollution</strong></em>,” says astronomer John Barentine, also of International Dark-Sky Association. “<em><strong>Done carelessly, it could be devastating</strong></em>.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>With 161 Votes in Favour, 8 Abstentions, General Assembly Adopts Landmark Resolution Recognizing Clean, Healthy, Sustainable Environment as Human Right</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With 161 votes in favour and 8 abstentions, the General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution today recognizing the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as a human right and calling for greater global efforts to ensure that principle is upheld.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Affirming that promoting that right requires the full implementation of the multilateral environmental agreements, the 193-member body called upon States, international organizations, business enterprises and other relevant stakeholders to adopt policies, enhance international cooperation, strengthen capacity-building and continue to share good practices in order to scale up efforts to ensure a clean, healthy and sustainable environment for all.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Abstract</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The nighttime is undergoing unprecedented change across much of the world, with natural light cycles altered by the introduction of artificial light emissions. Here we review the extent and dynamics of artificial light at night (ALAN), the benefits that ALAN provides, the environmental costs ALAN creates, approaches to mitigating these negative effects, and how costs are likely to change in the future. We particularly highlight the consequences of the increasingly widespread use of light-emitting diode (LED) technology for new lighting installations and to retrofit pre-existing ones. Although this has been characterized as a technological lighting revolution, it also constitutes a revolution in the environmental costs and impacts of ALAN, particularly because the LEDs commonly used for outdoor lighting have significant emissions at the blue wavelengths to which many biological responses are particularly sensitive. It is clear that a very different approach to the use of artificial lighting is required.</p>
