Reposted from the website Electromagnetic Radiation Safety, by Joel Moskowitz, Ph.D.

https://www.saferemr.com/2020/02/will-scientific-american-clear-up.html

In September 2019, Scientific American, the oldest, continuously published monthly magazine in the U.S., published an opinion piece on its website entitled, “5G Is Coming: How Worried Should We Be about the Health Risks? So far, at least, there’s little evidence of danger.”

The piece was written by Kenneth Foster, an emeritus professor of bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania. Foster is a member of a committee that sets exposure limits for wireless radiation and consults for industry and government. His article discussed the controversy about the rollout of 5G based upon widespread concerns about the adverse impact of this technology on our health. Foster argued that exposure to radio frequency radiation (RFR) from 5G will be similar to, or lower than, current levels because of the deployment of many “small cell” antennas. Hence, 5G exposure will comply with current RFR exposure limits that protect against “excessive heating of tissue.”

Although Foster admitted that research on the effects of long-term exposure to 5G millimeter waves was lacking, he restated the FDA’s position that “[t]he available scientific evidence to date does not support adverse health effects in humans due to exposures at or under the current limits.” Thus, “the request to ‘stop the distribution of 5G products appears too drastic a measure. We first need to see how this new technology will be applied and how the scientific evidence will evolve.’”

In October, Scientific American published an opinion piece which I wrote entitled, “We Have No Reason to Believe 5G Is Safe:The technology is coming, but contrary to what some people say, there could be health risks,” that rebutted Foster’s article. My piece is reprinted on my Electromagnetic Radiation Safety website.

Veteran science writer William Broad painted Carpenter as a willing tool of a disinformation campaign promoted by RT America, a TV network which he described as “the cat’s paw of Russian president, Vladimir Putin.” The page-one story ran under the headline, “Your 5G Phone Won’t Hurt You But Russia Wants You To Think Otherwise.”

Two months later, on July 16, Broad was back for another hit on Carpenter. This time, he was given most of the front page of the Times’ Tuesday science section, to portray Carpenter as a fringe player working “hard to revise established science.”

Much of what Broad wrote was fiction. (See “A Fact-Free Hit on a 5G Critic.”)

Now Scientific American has ambushed Joel Moskowitz, one of the few other academics willing to state the obvious: No one knows whether 5G is safe. Moskowitz, based at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health, runs the widely read blog, Electromagnetic Radiation Safety. This new attack, written by David Grimes, an Irish physicist and science columnist, is vicious. Grimes labels Moskowitz a scaremonger —it’s in the headline: “Don’t Fall Prey to Scaremongering about 5G.”

Re-posted from Electromagnetic Radiation Safety, Nov 18, 2019

Over the past two years, I have heard from many hundreds of people from all over our country who are opposed to the deployment of 5G. They have educated themselves about wireless radiation risks and decided they do not want the Telecom industry to install “small cells” in their communities.

I believe we are seeing the emergence of a grassroots movement in the U.S. much like the nonsmokers’ rights movement. A voluntary association of organizations and individuals, Americans for Responsible Technology, has emerged to play a role like Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights has assumed for the past four decades — to protect the health of Americans from a major source of environmental pollution.

There is no consensus within the scientific community about the safety of 5G as some would like the public to believe. As a result, many scientists and doctors have called for a moratorium on the deployment of this technology.

The following articles debate the potential health risks.

The International EMF Alliance submitted the following letter, “Misconception of 5G,” to Scientific American on November 7, 2019. The authors have not heard from Scientific American whether they will publish it.

This five-page letter rebuts an article written by David Grimes, “Don’t Fall Prey to Scaremongering about 5G,” that Scientific American published on October 28, 2019. The Grimes letter rebuts an article written by Joel Moskowitz, “We Have No Reason to Believe that 5G is Safe,” that Scientific American published on October 17, 2019. The Moskowitz letter rebuts an article written by Kenneth Foster, “5G is Coming: How Worried Should We Be About the Health Risks?,” that Scientific American published on September 16, 2019.
