Metal roofs, due to their conductive properties, can act as unintended RF antennas. This effect is amplified when a metal roof is unearthed, increasing the likelihood of radiofrequency (RF) radiation hotspots. In these cases, the metal roof can pick up and re-radiate RF signals from nearby sources, creating potential hazards.

However, when properly grounded, metal roofs can serve as excellent protection against radiation. A grounded metal roof can shield the building’s interior from external RF and electromagnetic fields. This protective capability depends on the roof’s earthing, ensuring that any accumulated electric charges are safely dissipated into the ground.

One key risk of an unearthed metal roof is jump conduction, where RF radiation generates high electric fields. If these fields exceed a certain threshold, electric currents can arc across air gaps, leading to discharges. Without grounding, these charges can’t be safely channeled, increasing the risk of electrical events.

In addition, metal roofs often consist of different parts, such as sections at varying levels, which can create junctions or gaps. These discontinuities may exacerbate RF reception and hotspots, particularly if the entire system isn’t uniformly grounded. Electrical imbalances between the roof sections can lead to uneven charge distribution and increased RF pickup.

Moisture can further complicate this issue, especially in homes with rising damp. Wet conditions increase conductivity, degrade insulation, and elevate the risk of RF exposure, worsening the chances of jump conduction.

Proper grounding of all metal roof components is crucial. It mitigates these risks, ensuring that electrical charges are safely directed away, reducing potential harm from both RF radiation and moisture-related complications.

A metal roof with solar panels

Grounding a metal roof with solar panels requires special consideration to ensure safety and avoid electrical issues.

Use a licensed electrician

Because grounding solar panel systems on metal roofs can be complex, it’s recommended to have a qualified electrician or solar installer ensure your system is properly designed and grounded according to local regulations.

By carefully managing bonding, grounding, and protection against potential issues like lightning and corrosion, one can avoid many of the pitfalls associated with grounding a metal roof with solar panels. Always prioritize safety by adhering to electrical standards and consulting professionals where necessary.

Abstract

A particular category of jewelry is one involving bracelets and necklaces that are deliberately made to contain naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM)—purveyors making unsubstantiated claims for health benefits from the release of negative ions. Conversely, within the bounds of the linear no-threshold model, long-term use presents a radiological risk to wearers. Evaluation is conducted herein of the radiological risk arising from wearing these products and gamma-ray spectrometry is used to determine the radioactivity levels and annual effective dose of 15 commercially available bracelets (samples B1 to B15) and five necklaces (samples N16 to N20). Various use scenarios are considered; a Geant4 Monte Carlo (Geant4 MC) simulation is also performed to validate the experimental results. The dose conversion coefficient for external radiation and skin equivalent doses were also evaluated. Among the necklaces, sample N16 showed the greatest levels of radioactivity, at 246 ± 35, 1682 ± 118, and 221 ± 40 Bq, for 238U, 232Th, and 40K, respectively. For the bracelets, for 238U and 232Th, sample B15 displayed the greatest level of radioactivity, at 146 ± 21 and 980 ± 71 Bq, respectively. N16 offered the greatest percentage concentrations of U and Th, with means of 0.073 ± 0.0002% and 1.51 ± 0.0015%, respectively, giving rise to an estimated annual effective dose exposure of 1.22 mSv, substantially in excess of the ICRP recommended limit of 1 mSv/year.

On Monday, 24th September, in the Wyspianski Session Chamber of the Krakow City Council, Jacek Majchrowski, the City Mayor, will open the 3rd International Forum on Environment Protection from EMF Pollution. Safe Limits.

We all profit from the possibilities offered by mobile devices and not always realize that their extensive use at home, at work or in public transport increases EMF levels in our natural environment.

The Krakow authorities have long been engaged in actions aimed at sustainable growth of digitalization and have repeatedly appealed to the government in this matter. Recently, the Krakow Council caused development of base stations map and purchase of EMF spectrum analyzer allowing to identify level, source and type of EFM pollution. The City Council also offers free rental of personal exposimeters available to residents who can take their own 24 hour measurements.

The Krakow residents are now being consulted on the “ EMF protection and safety program for the City of Krakow for the years 2018-2022”. Moreover, “Reducing of EMF emission” will be included in the City Development Strategies 2030 in the “Quality of Life” section.

Digital revolution is on the eve of implementation of next generation 5g technology. In order to accelerate the transmission it has been proposed to use frequencies never before tested in customer devices and having unverified effects. This will inevitably lead to further development of infrastructure, with new base stations being installed, and result in increased microwave radiation – in electromagnetic radiation spectrum – that has not been previously observed in nature. On the other hand, scientific evidence of negative influence of EMFs is growing.

Ready to face the new challenges, the City of Krakow has invited guests from abroad and from Poland, to take part in the 3rd Forum. Among foreign speakers, Italy will be represented by Dr. Fiorella Belpoggi, Head of Research at the Ramazzini Institute, who will present a lecture on “Carcinogenic effect of base station environmental emission – the latest results of in vivo studies”.

French measurements taken to protect cell phone users will be described by Dr. Marc Arazi, a physician, who will discuss the behind the scenes actions and global effects of the “PhoneGate” affair.

From the Polish side, Przemysław Kitowski M.Sc.Eng., a doctoral student of Faculty of Management and Economy, Gdańsk University of Technology and Head of R&D at Mudita, will talk about the global scale innovative solutions in minimizing electromagnetic radiation and protection of mobile devices users from EMF associated risk.

The paper on “Role of state authorities in preventive and protective actions aimed at protecting people from excessive exposure to EFMs” will be presented by Krzysztof Kwiatkowski, President of the Supreme Chamber of Control (NIK)

Jacek Stępień D.Sc.Eng. from University of Science and Technology will discuss the beginnings of EMF monitoring in Krakow.

The results of EMF measurements obtained from personal exposimeters will be analyzed by Dr. Barbara Gałdzińska-Calik from the Environment Department, Municipality of Krakow, responsible for the activities in this field.

The last speaker will be Ms. Marta Patena, Councillor of the City of Krakow, who will talk about “Krakow Programme for Protection from EMFs – presenting summary and lines of activities”

The organizers hope that the coming Forum will be an opportunity to exchange opinions and experience and an inspiration for innovative actions facilitating communication in the 21st century but, at the same time, improving the condition of the environment in which we live.
