The monograph “Mobile phone and health” has been published, author Yuri Borisovich Zubarev, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Technical Sciences, member of the RNKZNI

Monograph by Corresponding Member of RAS Yu.B. Zubarev is a special edition because of the author’s unique scientific and practical experience, which allows him to comprehensively consider the topic. Yuri Borisovich is well known to specialists in the field of radiobiology and hygiene of non-ionizing radiation, since it was he who ordered the sanitary standards for radio frequencies that were published in 1984 and 2003. It is these SanPiNs that today determine approaches to the electromagnetic safety of cellular communications and other radio transmission facilities.

But, first of all, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yu.B. Zubarev is known in the telecommunications industry – as the deputy minister of communications in charge of science in the industry, and as the director of the Radio Research Institute. He stood at the origins of the creation of federal mobile communication systems for general and special purposes, for which he was awarded the high award of the Government of the Russian Federation.

The monograph analyzes the application of the electromagnetic field in radio communications, in particular in mobile communications. The author examines the history of the development of sanitary standards for radio frequencies in our country, analyzing the issue from the point of view of the state customer of these SanPiN. Yuri Borisovich notes an important feature of the procedure for developing the maximum permissible levels of radio frequencies – under his leadership, the creation of sanitary standards preceded the development of fundamentally new radio transmitting means or went in parallel with the creation of new technology. The State Program for the Study of the Bioeffects of Radio Frequencies, adopted in 1984, made it possible to conduct biomedical research with promising modulation methods and a method for organizing complex electromagnetic signals, which provided a scientific groundwork that is relevant even for analyzing the biological effects of a 5G signal.

A significant section of the book is devoted to the prospects for the development of mobile communications. The opinion of Yuri Borisovich, as the ideologist of the scientific and technical foundations of this popular technology, is extremely important for understanding the possible consequences of electromagnetic pollution for the health of the population of our country, and also allows you to analyze and choose the optimal measures to create a healthy environment. Special attention of Yu.B. Zubarev pays attention to methods of protecting children and pregnant women, believing that their health is a task of state importance in the Russian Federation.

The monograph was reviewed by the founding member of the RNKZNI, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Yu.P. Paltsev and Doctor of Technical Sciences E.P. Arzumyan, Chief Researcher, MNITI CJSC.

The publication can be ordered from the author, contact through the Scientific Secretary of the RNKZNI V.A. Alekseev or through the postgraduate department of CJSC “MNITI”

Abstract

Background and Objectives

The incidence of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) ranges from 0.59 to 5 per 100,000 persons, and it is on the rise in many countries. The reason for this rise is multifactorial, and possible contributing factors include an aging population, overdiagnosis, ionizing radiation, air pollution and others. The aim of this study is to conduct an epidemiological study of GBM in a well-defined population over a 10-year period and determine its significance, while comparing results with international standards.

Materials and Methods

All histological diagnoses of GBM in Malta from 2008 to 2017 were identified. Poisson regression was used to determine significance in incidence variation. Log-rank tests were used to compare the survival distributions of each variable. Cox regression for survival analysis with the Breslow method for ties was then performed to consider the overall model.

Results

A total of 100 patients (61 males; mean age 60.29±10.09 years) were diagnosed with GBM over the period 2008 to 2017. There was a significant increase in incidence from 0.73 to 4.49 per 100,000 over the 10-year period (p≤0.001). The most common presenting complaint was limb paresis (29%). Approximately 65% of patients were treated with maximum safe resection (MSR). Using Cox regression analysis, younger age at presentation and treatment with MSR significantly improved survival (p=0.026 and p≤0.001, respectively). The median survival was 10 months.

Conclusions

An increasing incidence of GBM is becoming evident, while the median survival remains low. This troubling trend emphasizes the importance of further research into GBM etiology and treatment.

Extract

Another possible risk factor is RF-EMF, a type of non-ionizing radiation. Natural sources include the sun and the Earth itself, while artificial sources include satellite devices, broadcasting devices and mobile phones. A Working Group met in 2011 at the International Agency for Research on Cancer to assess the carcinogenicity of RF-EMF. They concluded that there may be an association between RF-EMF (level 2B evidence) and glioma predisposition [16]. Hardell and Calberg in 2015 found an association between mobile phone use and glioma risk with an odds ratio of 1.3 (95% CI=1.1-1.6 overall) to 3.0 (95% CI=1.7-5.2) [17]. According to the Malta Communications Authority reports, 385,636 active mobile phone internet subscriptions in 2008 had increased drastically to 604,759 subscriptions in 2017 [24]. There has also been an introduction of 4G in Malta in 2013, with coverage of the entire Maltese islands by 2015 [25]. Taking all this into consideration, there are clear indications of increasing public RF-EMF radiation levels throughout Malta. Currently, national risk assessments are being carried out to assess the introduction of 5G in Malta and other countries [26].

Abstract

This article identifies adverse effects of non-ionizing non-visible radiation (hereafter called wireless radiation) reported in the premier biomedical literature. It emphasizes that most of the laboratory experiments conducted to date are not designed to identify the more severe adverse effects reflective of the real-life operating environment in which wireless radiation systems operate. Many experiments do not include pulsing and modulation of the carrier signal. The vast majority do not account for synergistic adverse effects of other toxic stimuli (such as chemical and biological) acting in concert with the wireless radiation. This article also presents evidence that the nascent 5 G mobile networking technology will affect not only the skin and eyes, as commonly believed, but will have adverse systemic effects as well.

Although direct causation of negative human health effects from RFR from cellular phone base stations has not been finalized, there is already enough medical and scientific evidence to warrant long-term liability concerns for companies deploying cellular phone towers. In order to protect cell phone tower firms from the ramifications of the failed paths of other industries that have caused unintended human harm (e.g. tobacco) this Current Issue summarizes the peer-reviewed literature on the effects of RFR from cellular phone base stations. Specifically the impacts of siting base stations are closely examined and recommendations are made for companies that deploy them to minimize their potential future liability.

Accumulating evidence reveals that exposure of bacteria to a wide variety of physical stressors ranging from ultrasound to ionizing and non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation can make them resistant to antibiotics. A study conducted recently showed that the exposure of E. coli DH5α to Wi-Fi radiofrequency radiation for 5 hours influenced several bacterial cellular and metabolic processes through up-regulating 52 genes and down-regulating 49 genes [1]. Another recent study conducted by the same team shows that exposure of Escherichia coli bacteria to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi radiofrequency radiation increased their antibiotic resistance and motility. Moreover, biofilm formation was enhanced in Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermis [2]. These findings clearly confirm our earlier findings on physical stressor-induced alterations (rise or fall) in bacterial drug resistance [3-5]. References:

General Information

Unexplained findings from epidemiological studies in two different areas of radiation protection prompted the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) to intensify the research on the etiology of childhood leukemia: (i) the increased incidence of childhood leukemia near nuclear power plants and (ii) the consistently observed association of the risk for childhood leukemia with exposure to low-level low-frequency magnetic fields. For both findings, no plausible explanation exists according to the current knowledge of biological effects of ionizing or non-ionizing radiation. On a nearly bi-annual basis, BfS – and varying partners – jointly organized five scientific meetings to discuss the knowns and unknowns and to define a long-term strategic research agenda towards a better understanding of the main causes of childhood leukemia. As a further follow-up the BfS is organizing a 6th international workshop that will be held in Freising (Munich) on November 20-22, 2019.

The Workshop will discuss current research results and future research directions, focusing on potential mechanisms of childhood leukemia development. In different sessions and two special sessions the following topics will be discussed:

Ionizing and non ionizing radiation as risk factors for childhood leukemia

Mechanisms of leukemia development, including genetic and epigenetic factors, the role of the immune system and environmental risk factors

Background radiation and risk of leukemia

Animal models to study leukemia

The workshop is conducted by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz (BfS)) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).

This monograph identifies adverse effects of wireless radiation as reported in the premier biomedical literature. It shows that most of the laboratory experiments that have been performed are not designed to elicit the more severe adverse effects reflective of the real-life operating environment in which wireless radiation is embedded. The monograph includes a substantial bibliography of papers that present these adverse effects, and shows that what has been reported is the tip of the iceberg of the full spectrum of potential adverse effects from wireless radiation.

The Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection are calling for the release of new EMF hazard warning signs for wireless users of mobile phones and other EMF sources, following the release of a published paper by Professor Oleg Grigoriev and ex-deputy minister of communication, Dr Prof Yuri Zubarev. The paper was published in September, 2019 in the oldest Russian journal of communication industry.

The EM Radiation Research Trust would like to thank Professor Oleg Grigoriev for providing this important information and call on Government officials to follow this example. The public should be alerted and hazard warning signs should be made mandatory for the safety of users to allow the public to make informed decisions.

Professor Oleg Grigoriev is the Chairman for the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection,
Dr.Sc. (radiobiology), Ph.D. (radiobiology & hygiene of non-ionizing radiation)
Laureate of Prize of the Russian Federation Government (for science and technology)
Chairman, Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection
Member, Scientific Consult for Radiobiology of Russian Academy of Science
Member, IARC of the WHO EMF project

The world needs to take note and follow this example. See the warning signs. The paper will be uploaded soon.
