Chinese telecommunications giant ZTE is preparing to capitalise on the expected growth of next-generation 5G technologies in South Africa.

This was revealed by Fu Zhen, chief technology officer of ZTE South Africa, and Fahad Nisar, technical marketing director at ZTE South Africa, in an e-mail interview with ITWeb.

While South African mobile operators have gradually started rolling out 5G networks in the big cities, ZTE believes the technology will become mainstream after 2025.

In preparation for the widespread adoption of 5G in SA, ZTE is partnering with local telcos to upgrade 4G LTE networks, which it believes will be critical in advancing the next-gen technology.

The GSM Association expects 4G connections to continue to grow for the next few years, peaking at just under 60% of global connections by 2023.

For 5G, its forecast is that it will account for a fifth (20%) of global connections by 2025.

Vendors that are positioning themselves to take advantage of the 5G growth in SA include Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia and ZTE.

This as South African telcos are taking a multi-vendor approach in their deployment of the next-generation connectivity technology.

So far, Vodacom, MTN and data-only network Rain have announced commercial 5G launches in SA.

“Energy consumption is set to increase dramatically if 5G is deployed in the same way as 3G and 4G were,” Ericsson warns in a report published in March.

“Some communications service providers have even estimated a doubling of their energy consumption to meet increasing traffic demands while improving their network and rolling out 5G,” writes Erik Ekudden, Senior VP, CTO and Head of Group Function Technology at Ericsson, in a foreword to the report.

“This is not sustainable from a cost or environmental perspective,” he warns.

At the same time, 5G is “the most energy-aware standard,” he continues, citing technological improvements such as smarter sleep modes and more efficient data transmission, which could help reduce the energy consumption of connected devices.

These features, combined with a new approach to network roll-out, make it possible to “quadruple data traffic without increasing energy consumption,” he believes.

In November last year, the EU agreed to take a tough line on 5G suppliers to reduce cybersecurity risks to next-generation mobile networks, seen as key to boosting economic growth and competitiveness.

The strategy included reducing countries’ and telecoms operators’ dependency on one supplier. World No. 1 telecoms equipment maker Huawei competes with Finland’s Nokia and Sweden’s Ericsson.

“Progress is urgently needed to mitigate the risk of dependency on high-risk suppliers, also with a view to reducing dependencies at (European) Union level,” the EU executive said, reporting on the progress made by the 27 EU countries.

China’s Ministry of Commerce is looking into export controls that would prevent Nokia and Ericsson from sending telecom equipment products it makes in China to other countries, the Journal reported.

South Africa should not rush into 5G – Ericsson

Bradley Prior 10 November 2019

Eva Andren, VP and head of managed services for Ericsson in the MEA region, has warned against rushing into 5G in South Africa until there is sufficient demand for the technology.

Speaking at a media briefing, Andren highlighted that while many networks are looking to get into the 5G space, investing too heavily into the technology quickly could result in a poor return on investment.

“It’s a question of timing,” explained Andren.

“If your timing is not right, you may not get the return of investment you are looking for. So you need to ask if the market is ready for it.”

Andren also highlighted that if your 5G network doesn’t have comprehensive coverage, users will be frustrated that they can’t always get the speeds they are expected.
