Abstract: Wearable metal objects with high electromagnetic reflection characteristics can cause interference with the incident waves during exposure to the electromagnetic (EM) radiation. Therefore, it is of interest to investigate the effect of metal objects capable of increasing the absorption of EM energy and temperature within the tissues when get exposed to EM radiation. A numerical analysis of increase in specific absorption rate (SAR) and temperature distribution in a human head model when metal objects are placed between the head and radiating source is performed. A realistic three-dimensional heterogeneous human head model, metal objects of different shapes and sizes, and spectacles with different lenses are used. A half-wavelength dipole antenna operating at 1800 MHz served as an EM radiation source. Results show that the presence of metal objects in proximity to the head alters SAR and temperature increase within the tissues. In most cases, metal objects redistribute the EM field incident upon them to a smaller region increasing power absorption, thereby increasing SAR and temperature in that region. The power absorption in head layers is found to be sensitive to metal object’s size and shape, and distance of the antenna from the objects.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214157X20305311?fbclid=IwAR1hYRDjM4lRLyD3KrSCYf71XCgAlr6hx4Wusy-Q0U2fCEcf9qY_s-FYpcI

According to the authors the metal objects definitely alter the absorption of EM radiation in the tissues. In most of the cases, presence of all shapes of metal objects increase the SAR and temperature in the head model for voice calling position. This paper, hence, shows how important it is to study temperature distribution along with the SAR distribution to clearly understand the effect of EM radiation on the tissues. Results obtained from this study can help spread awareness among the people who often get exposed to EM radiation wearing some type of metal objects. If the metal objects have size and distance in the range of generating strong coupling interaction with the EM radiation source, this could cause a harmful effect on the health.

Fahmy HM, Mohammed FF. Hepatic injury induced by radio frequency waves emitted from conventional Wi-Fi devices in Wistar rats [published online ahead of print, 2020 Aug 7]. Hum Exp Toxicol. 2020;960327120946470. doi:10.1177/0960327120946470

Abstract

In this study, the impact of standard 2.45 GHz radio frequency source (averaged whole-body specific absorption rate 0.01 W kg-1 24 h-1 daily for 40 consecutive days) on the liver of Wistar female rats was investigated. The rats were randomly divided into control and Wi-Fi-exposed groups. At the end of the exposure, liver samples were dissected from rats. Rats’ livers were inspected through the evaluation of some oxidative stress parameters and the evaluation of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase levels as well as through the molecular investigation using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Histopathological examination in addition to ultrastructure examination was also performed. The present data revealed that Wi-Fi exposure leads to severe oxidative stress in the rat liver. Furthermore, Wi-Fi exposure resulted in deleterious effects in the liver function and alters its molecular structure. Moreover, severe histological and ultrastructural alterations are reported in the hepatic tissues points to hepatotoxic effects induced by Wi-Fi exposure. In conclusion, care must be taken when using Wi-Fi emitting devices due to their severe impact on the liver. Public awareness of the need to decrease exposure time and increase the distance from Wi-Fi exposure sources must be raised wherever possible.

Carter Holland, Law Street Media, Jun 3, 2020

On June 1, plaintiff Ninety Sixty LLC filed a breach of contract complaint against Sprint Spectrum Realty, Company, L.P., and T-Mobile USA Inc., alleging that they installed cell tower equipment without permission. Ninety Sixity alleges that a cell tower mounted by the defendants encroached on its property and violated terms of a contract. Sprint was acquired by T-Mobile on April 1, making it a successor in interest to the company; both are collectively referred to as “Sprint” in the complaint. The case is being held in the Southern District of New York before Judge Colleen McMahon. The plaintiffs are represented by Ulmer & Berne.

Sprint allegedly mounted a cell tower installation on a residential townhouse immediately adjacent to one owned by Ninety Sixty. Ninety Sixty co-owner Gerald Kerner noticed the installation prior to moving into the house in 2012. According to the complaint, the equipment was disguised, and “antennas were painted to look like the brickwork and thus were camouflaged.” Being close in proximity to the installation, Kerner feared he would receive excessive electromagnetic radiation.

Apoptotic Effect of 1800 MHz Electromagnetic Radiation on NIH/3T3 Cells. Int. J. Environ. Res. Public Health 2020, 17, 819.

Abstract

To investigate the effect of 1800 MHz electromagnetic radiation (EMR) on apoptosis, we exposed NIH/3T3 cells at 1800 MHz with a specific absorption rate (SAR) of 2 W/kg intermittently for 12, 24, 36, and 48 h. After exposure, Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) and flow cytometry were used to detect cell viability and apoptosis; the expression of p53, a molecule with the key role in apoptosis, was measured by real-time qPCR, western blot, and immunofluorescence; and images of the structure of the mitochondria, directly reflecting apoptosis, were captured by electron microscopy. The results showed that the viability of cells in the 12, 36, and 48 h exposure groups significantly decreased compared with the sham groups; after 48 h of exposure, the percentage of late apoptotic cells in the exposure group was significantly higher. Real-time qPCR results showed that p53 mRNA in the 48 h exposure group was 1.4-fold of that in the sham group; significant differences of p53 protein fluorescence expression were observed between the exposure groups and the sham groups after 24 h and 48 h. The mitochondrial swelling and vesicular morphology were found in the electron microscopy images after 48 h exposure. These findings demonstrated 1800 MHz, SAR 2 W/kg EMR for 48 h may cause apoptosis in NIH/3T3 cells and that this apoptosis might be attributed to mitochondrial damage and upregulation of p53 expression.

ijerph-17-00819

The authors note that: “The potential biological effects of EMR have not been proved and current research data are insufficient to provide strong evidence of the possible health risks. The above findings indicate that there is a need for more scientific research support on the bioeffects of EMR“.

“In conclusion, this study reveals an increase in the apoptosis rate, upregulation of p53, and mitochondrial damage in NIH/3T3 cells are all caused by 1800 MHz, 2 W/kg EMR. We provide new experimental evidence for the biological effects of EMR on cells and also provide a reference for studying the health effects of long-term EMR exposure.

Figure 6: The sham groups and 0 h group cells showed normal mitochondrial structure, while NIH/3T3 cells treated by EMR appeared to be swollen and had vesicular morphology. The longer the irradiation time, the more frequent the appearance of altered mitochondria morphology (e.g., vesicular morphology and swelling). This means that EMR may cause damage to the mitochondrial structure.

See Figure 6. EMR at 1800 MHz may cause damage to mitochondria in NIH/3T3 cells. Electron microscopy was used to detect mitochondrial structure.
