Since the controversial introduction of smart meters in the City of Johannesburg in 2015, many residents have complained of incorrect readings and meters running, even when the power is out.

But that said, could there be a darker side to these ‘convenient’ meters?

According to many, including experts and concern groups, the answer is “Yes”.

According to EMF Safety Network’s website, “Military studies show [that] pulsed radio frequency, which leads to radio frequency radiation (RFR), which is radiated by certain devices including smart meters, can cause serious health problems, including tinnitus, memory loss and seizures. Thousands of studies link biological effects to RFR exposure, including increased cancer risk, damage to the nervous system, adverse reproductive effects, DNA damage, and more. The top public health official in Santa Cruz County California prepared a report, confirming smart meters pose a health risk”.

Another expert, Dr David Carpenter, a graduate of Harvard Medical School and a physician who has worked in the area of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and public health for over 18 years, has also warned utility companies that are forcing smart meters down the throats of their customers.

“Carpenter adamantly insists that there is no evidence whatsoever that smart meters are in any way safe for human beings. He goes on to say that there is, in fact, ample evidence that demonstrates ‘convincingly and consistently’ that exposure to radio frequency radiation (RFR) at elevated levels for long periods of time increases the risk of cancer, damages the nervous system, and adversely affects the reproductive organs”, according to TheHealthyHomeEconomist.com

Activists have also expressed their concern over other issues related to the meters such as privacy invasion and cyber security threats.

The risks to health from nonionizing electromagnetic fields are controversial.
However, the scientific evidence that indicates grave dangers continues to grow: increase in the risk of cancer, infertility, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, electrohypersensitivity…

In recent years we have seen accusations by citizens groups and by scientists, researchers and experts (independent of industry) about conflicts of interest of the committees that decide on the permitted levels to which the entire population is exposed.

According to many experts more and more research points to the necessity to upgrade the classification of radio frequency radiation as a carcinogen to 2A or even to 1.

(Mobile telephony, WiFi, cordless telephones…) This together with evidence of important nonthermal biological effects reinforces the need to apply the precautionary principle in relation to lowering the levels of exposure, with special attention to the most vulnerable groups such as children.

In contrast, the march toward 5G technology involves a radical increase of levels of electromagnetic pollution. Therefore 180 doctors and scientists from 36 countries have written a letter to the European Union demanding a moratorium on its implementation.

Meanwhile the industry tries to make its message about lack of harm prevail through large investments in the media and in ill-concealed lobbying.

We think this at least merits a profound public debate.

Therefore with Saturday’s program we wish to give voice to the point of view of scientists and independent experts with the hope of stimulating a look that is critical as well as scientific that expands the tools that we have as a society to invest in a healthful technology.
